Job Description

The Appellate Division, Fourth Department, is seeking a skilled and dynamic Principal Law Librarian to oversee the entire library collection and manage assigned staff. This is a senior position responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the library while also actively participating in long-range planning and resource management strategies. The Principal Law Librarian will provide essential support to judges, court personnel, and other stakeholders by offering expert research and resource management solutions for complex legal issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain the entire law library collection, ensuring resources are current and relevant for court operations.
  • Supervise assigned library staff, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Participate in long-term library planning and contribute to resource management policies and practices.
  • Collaborate with judges, court personnel, and other stakeholders to identify and implement research alternatives for complex legal matters.
  • Prepare and manage budgets, statistical reports, and resource allocation, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Regularly review and evaluate legal research materials, making recommendations for new acquisitions or updates to existing resources.
  • Oversee the maintenance and organization of chambers’ collections, ensuring resources are readily accessible for judicial use.
  • Assist with various administrative projects as requested by the Presiding Justice, Clerk of the Court, or Deputy Clerk of the Court.

Qualifications:

One year of permanent, competitive class service in the Senior Law Librarian title or three (3) years of permanent, competitive class service in the Law Librarian title

or

Master's degree from an accredited school of library science and five (5) years of work experience in a law library or a library specializing in the social sciences, e.g., political science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology, one (1) year of which must be in an administrative position;

or

Law Degree from an accredited law school and five (5) years of work experience in a law library or library specializing in social sciences; e.g. political science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology, one (1) year of which must be in an administrative position;

or

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
